Based in part on our research that has shown (no surprise here) that public health his woefully inadequate in its use of computing technology, we are endeavoring to give students hands-on experience with tools like Jing. The reality of most academic, research, and definately public health work these days is that you will work with partners all over the country and the globe, so the ability to rapidly send a multimedia presentation long distance is valuable. Briefly, our assignment will be for students to choose a topic, reading, or concept, and prepare a Jing (or other technology based presentation) that teaches the material back to their peers. We are dangling Jing in front of them, but also giving them the choice of other technologies, as long as it can be sent and received/viewed by computer. This will hopefully address three overall objectives: Hands-on experience with rapid authoring as professional training, letting them really engage and learn the material by creatively teaching it to others, and gathering student-created teaching material for future use.
