This post is half a comment on Josh's post of 7/25. Cringely has a post on this. According to him, what is coming is the introduction of a H.264 chip onto the MacBook logic board. This is a new chip that enables real time de-coding and encoding of video.
His reasoning is pretty cogent. The Apple execs said this transition would temporarily lower margins... which is what the addition of this chip would do, as the chip would cost Apple $50 per unit to add. Given that the chip might well make it possible to do 1080p video over the network, Cringely thinks it's "ll about taking command of the 1080p video market." He thinks it will enable real time HD.
