I like this argument.
This Friday I found myself in a stimulating discussion with some very smart people about big picture, strategic directions for our institution. I think I would have to add the necessity to change how we deal with education and copyright to any list of strategic directions.
(Others being the work to move to a student-centered, active learning approach and away from a faculty-centric, information scarcity model. Another direction suggested at the meeting is to develop a culture of evidence in decision making).
Weller's list is concise and well reasoned. Some of his suggestions that I find particularly insightful include:
- Legitimize the mashup
- Make creative commons a default
- Use material we find online
- Teach and encourage attribution and reference
- Release archive content
Weller expands on all these ideas. Would be interested to hear folks who disagree with this post both in general and its particulars.
